This is Bella the snake. She is very friendly and she likes to be wrapped around a neck. She is looking for a friend.

She was made of 100% cotton fabric and felt. The thread used is 100% cotton. The eyes are painted in acrylic paint which is non-toxic

She is aproximately 105 cm. or 41 inches long and 10 cm. or 3,5 inches wide.

Stuffed with high quality polyester fill.

Esta es Bella, la víbora, es muy amistosa y le gusta enroscarse alrededor de un cuello. Ella esta buscando un amigo.

Esta hecha con tela 100% algodon y paño lency. El hilo es 100% algodón. Los ojos están pintados con acrilico no-tóxico.

Mide aproximadamente 105 cm. ó 41 pulgadas de largo y 10 cm. ó 3,5 cm. de ancho.

La víbora está rellena con polyester de alta calidad.

One of a kind Stuffed Rag Doll.

This is a OOAK (one-of-a-kind) original design doll. 

She’s handmade in 100% cotton muslin. Her hair is hand stitched brown felt. Her face is hand painted with non-toxic acrylic paint.
Her dress is made with a vintage 100% silk fabric. Around her neck she’s wearing a floral print scarf. And she's carrying a red, hand stitched felt purse.

Esta muñeca es única y de diseño original.
Está hecha a mano con tela muselina de 100% algodón. El pelo es de paño lenci (fieltro) y está cosido a mano. La cara está pintada a mano con pintura acrílica no-tóxica.
Está vestida con un vestido de tela vintage 100% seda. Alrededor de su cuello lleva un pañuelo floral, y además tiene una cartera de fieltro cosida a mano.

One of a kind stuffed Art Rag Doll. Cloth doll.

This is a one-of-a-kind original doll designed by me, based on my “Doll” illustration. 
She’s handmade in 100% cotton muslin. With hand embroidered hair, face and shoes. 
Her light pink dress is made with upcycled fabric with a ribbon around her waist tied in the back with a bow.
Around her neck she’s wearing a necklace made with fake vintage pearls and she has small fake pearls in her shoes. The neckline of her dress is also trimmed with small pearls.
In her head she’s wearing an accessory made with the same fabric as her dress and different glass beads and pearls.

Esta muñeca es única y fue diseñada por María "Fer" Delgado, basada en su ilustración de “Muñeca paseando a su perrito”.
Está hecha a mano con tela muselina de 100% algodón. Tiene la cara, el pelo y los zapatos bordados a mano. 
Está vestida con un vestido en rosa pálido. Tiene un lazo alrededor de la cintura atado por detrás con un moño.
Lleva un collar de perlas falsas antiguas y también tiene unas perlas falsas pequeñas en los zapatos. El cuello de su vestido también está bordado con pequeñas perlas. En su cabeza lleva un accesorio hecho con la misma tela del vestido, mostacillas de vidrio y perlas.

Kids stuffed rag bunny. Hand embroidered.

This is an original design, one-of-a-kind, rag bunny. It’s handmade in 100% upcycled cotton denim. With a hand embroidered face and belly patch (which is also machine stitched for extra sturdiness). The thread used for the embroidery is 100% cotton. He has a cotton denim patch in his belly.

Este conejo de paño es un diseño original y único. Está hecho a mano con tela mezclilla de 100% algodón. Con la cara y apliqué bordados a mano. El hilo usado en el bordado es 100% algodón. Tiene apliqué en las orejas y la barriga de mezclilla de 100% algodón.

Here are some of our one of a kind art dolls. They're handmade with hand embroidered details such as the face, hair and shoes. Each one is a unique little piece of fabric art.

Aquí les presento a algunas de nuestras muñecas de diseño, no son juguetes son objetos de colección. Están hechas a mano con detalles bordados a mano como el pelo, la cara y los zapatos. Cada una es una pieza única de arte textil.
En las fotos están sentadas al lado de uno de nuestros conejos.

The Paper Needle.... An introduction.

“The Paper Needle” is the name of our shop, business and blog. We are a mother-daughter team. I'm Fer (daughter) an Illustrator with a degree in Fine Arts. And my mom, Annie, is an embroidery, pattern making and sewing lover. Our products and prints are lovingly handcrafted in our workshop. 

Why did we choose to name it “The Paper Needle” you may ask yourself....

Well, we chose 2 materials we both use in our projects. Annie has been using embroidery and sewing needles practically all her life, like all the woman in our family have done for generations. 

While I studied Art I became interested in Textile Art and Etching and so I became acquainted with other types of needles... larger, thicker and stronger needles made to be used with thicker threads and yarns. And for etching on metal plates I used a thick large needle used for sewing mattresses!

Paper is another common material in our projects. Needless to say everyone of our projects starts on a piece of paper to be taken further as a watercolor or a pattern for a stuffed toy. Paper plays a vital role in everyone of our projects even when it  is not apparent in the final product.

"La Aguja de Papel".... Una introducción.

“The Paper Needle” o “La Aguja de Papel” en español, es el nombre de nuestra tienda, negocio y blog. Somos un equipo de madre e hija. Mi nombre es Fer (la hija), soy Ilustradora con un título de Artes Plásticas. Mi madre, Annie, es una amante de la costura y el bordado. Además usa sus habilidades para crear los moldes de nuestros muñecos. 

Nuestros productos son hechos a mano con cariño y dedicación en nuestro taller.

Tal vez, usted se pregunte por qué elegimos el nombre de “La Aguja de Papel”... 

Bueno, en realidad elegimos 2 materiales que las dos usamos regularmente en nuestros proyectos. Annie ha usado agujas para bordar y coser prácticamente toda su vida, como lo han hecho, por generaciones, todas las mujeres de nuestra familia.

Cuando yo estudié Arte, me interesé por las Artes Textiles y el Grabado. y fue entonces que conocí otro tipo de agujas... más grandes, gruesas y fuertes, hechas para coser y bordar con lanas y fibras gruesas. Y para el grabado sobre planchas de metal, utilizaba una aguja muy grande que, originalmente, se usaba para coser colchones.

El papel es otro material que comúnmente utilizamos. No es necesario que les diga que cada uno de nuestros proyectos nace sobre una hoja de papel, para después ser desarrollado como una acuarela o el molde para un muñeco de tela. El papel juega un rol vital en cada uno de nuestros proyectos aun cuando no sea aparente en el producto final.

Green with rain drops

Verde... Después de una lluvia invernal.

At the Art gallery...

Maybe I should have titled this post : "what to do with a 3 part picture frame"...
I had these lovely prints of  a couple of works by Frederick Dielman. The one with the cat is titled "The Widow" and the dog is "Uncle Toby". Very kitsch indeed! 
Now, I don't mean any disrespect to the artist but I just couldn't help myself. My excuse is that I just had to make a little drawing to accompany them.

Tal vez a este post le tendría que haber puesto el título: "que hacer con un marco con 3 divisiones"...

Tenía unas postales de un par de obras del artista Frederick Dielman. La del gato se titula "La Viuda" y la del perro es "Tio Toby". Muy Kitsch por cierto!

No era mi intención faltarle el respeto al artista pero no me pude resistir. Mi excusa es que tenía que hacer un dibujo para acompañarlos.

How to make chocolate leaves

I made cupcakes for my Mom's birthday and for decorating I chose some berries and chocolate leaves, which always look great when decorating baked goodies. I just love them and they're really easy to make. 

Cómo hacer hojas de chocolate.

Para el cumpleaños de mi Mama hice unos cupcakes y para decorarlos elegí algunos berries y hojas de chocolate, las cuales siempre se ven muy bien cuando se usan para decorar repostería. A mi me encantan y son bien simples de hacer. 

First I choose some leaves from my garden. I always use only the kind that are firm and have marked veins, like gardenia, camellia, lemon or orange tree leaves. The marked thick veins are a must. If you use a leave with no marked veins you'll end up with a plain and not very attractive leave shape.
Once I have my "special" leaves (one for each chocolate leave you need) I wash and dry them with paper towel. 
I then melt the chocolate in a pan on a dish pan with water over a low heat, this is old school, but you can always use the microwave. I'm not very precise with quantities but I used 2 squares for about 15 leaves.


Primero hay que elegir algunas hojas. Siempre elijo hojas que son firmes y tienen venas bien marcadas, como las hojas de gardenia, camelia, las de naranjo o limonero. Las venas marcadas son esenciales. Si usamos hojas sin venas terminamos con una simple forma de hoja lisa y no son muy atractivas así.
Una vez que tenemos las hojas (una por cada hoja de chocolate que necesitamos) las lavamos y secamos.
Derrito el chocolate a baño María pero también se puede usar un microondas. No soy muy precisa con las cantidades, pero use 50 grs. para hacer 15 hojas.

With a small spoon I covered the BACKside of each leave with a thick layer of chocolate making sure to clean the edges afterwards.


Con una cuchara pequeña cubrí la parte de ATRÁS de cada hoja con una capa gruesa de chocolate y después limpié bien los bordes.

Once I had all the leaves covered in chocolate I placed them on a shallow pan in the freezer for 20 minutes. 


Una vez que tuve todas mis hojas cubiertas de chocolate, las coloque en una bandeja en el congelador por 20 minutos.

After the chocolate is set comes the very delicate part of all this process...
I peel off the leave, always starting at the stem. This is a useful trick I learned after breaking a few. It's always useful to make a couple more just in case some break. You can always eat them afterwards if you had a uneventful peeling :)


Una vez que el chocolate está firme viene la parte delicada de todo este proceso...
Despego la hoja, siempre comenzando por la parte del tallo. Este es un truco que aprendí después que rompí varias. Siempre es bueno hacer algunas demás por si se rompe alguna. Siempre se pueden comer después si despegan todas sin problema :)

Little Chairs.

About once or twice a week we do our fruit and veggie shopping at a local street market.

Recently, on a dried fruit stand I noticed a group of wooden doll chairs, just sitting there right besides the dried apricots.

Sillitas.

Una o dos veces por semana compramos frutas y verduras en una feria local.

Recientemente, en un puesto de frutos secos, me fije en un grupo de sillitas para muñecas, justo al lado de los damascos secos.

Their story was pretty interesting, they were made by an artisan using wood from unused fruit crates and water reeds for the seats. 

Su historia era bastante interesante, las había hecho un artesano usando madera de cajones de fruta y junco acuático (totora) para los asientos.

I bought 2, one is a simple chair and the other one has arms. The wooden surface was quite shabby, so I sanded them and gave the one with arms a coat of white paint. I think they'll  be quite handy when I take photos of my dolls.

Me compre 2, una es simple y la otra tiene brazos. La madera estaba bastante áspera, así que las lije y pinte de blanco que tiene brazos. Pienso que me van a servir bastante cuando le saque fotos a mis muñecas.

Scones Recipe

Autumn is here and as the colder weather settles in so does the craving for baked goodies. And so it is that I'm sharing this scone recipe, but they're a bit different (these are less fluffy) from the traditional scottish ones.  They remind more of the scones that were made in bakeries during my childhood in Argentina.

Receta de Scones.

Llegó el otoño, Y a medida que va aumentando el frio también lo hace el deseo de comer cosas ricas. Así es que estoy compartiendo esta receta de scones; pero son un poco diferentes los escoceses tradicionales (estos son un poco menos esponjosos). Estos me hacen acordar un poco a los que se compraban en las panaderías durante mi infancia en la Argentina.

4  cups flour

¾ cup cold butter

½ cup sugar

4 teaspoons baking powder

4 eggs

½ cup milk (aprox.)

2 teaspoons grated lemon rind

Sift the flour into a bowl. With a knife, cut the butter in little pieces and mix with the flour. Using your fingertips or a fork rub the butter into the flour until it resembles sand or breadcrumbs. Add the baking powder, grated lemon rind, sugar and mix well. Beat 3 eggs (the fourth one is saved for later) and pour into the flour mixture. Start mixing with a wooden spoon and pour the milk a little at a time until you have a soft dough that’s sticky to the touch. Turn onto a lightly floured surface. Knead it gently a few times. Don’t knead too much or the scones will be tough. Roll with a pin until it’s about 1 inch thick. Cutout the scones with a round cutter and place on a greased baking tray. Beat the remaining egg and, with a brush, gently glaze all the cut scones on the tray. Bake in a 390º F oven for about 25 minutes.

500 grs. harina

150 grs. Mantequilla (fría)

100 grs. azúcar

4 cucharaditas de polvo de hornear

4 huevos

½ taza de leche aprox

2 cucharaditas de ralladura de limon

Tamizar la harina en un bowl, cortamos la mantequilla con un cuchillo sobre la harina en trozos lo mas pequeños posibles. Mezclamos la harina con la mantequilla con los dedos o un tenedor hasta que quede bien arenoso y no se encuentren trozos grandes de mantequilla. Agregamos el polvo de hornear, la ralladura de limón y el azúcar, mezclando bien. Batimos aparte tres huevos y guardamos el cuarto huevo para más tarde. Mezclamos los huevos batidos con la harina e incorporamos la leche de a poco hasta tener una masa suave que se pega a los dedos. Colocamos la masa sobre una superficie enharinada y amasamos un poco. No demasiado o  sino los scones salen duros. Se estira con palote hasta que tiene casi dos centímetros de grosor. Se cortan con cortador redondo y colocamos en asadera enmantequillada. Se bate el huevo que guardamos y los pintamos por encima. Se colocan en un horno a 200ºc por 25 minutos.

Doodles and Roses.

I don't know what is it with bunnies lately. For I don't know what reason I find myself sketching them more and more. Anyway, I started this one afternoon while I was waiting for the cable guy. Well, lets just say he took his time to arrive... But what a great opportunity to practice some typography! I sketched out the letters and as I start to ink, I get this mental image of a tough looking, leather wearing, tattooed bunny jumped into my head. Well I ended up loving this bunny guy. I'll definitely polish this idea in a near future, maybe add a bike or something.

Un dibujito y algunas rosas.

No se que me pasa con los conejos últimamente. No se porque razón cada vez los dibujo con más frecuencia. Bueno, este lo empece una tarde mientras esperaba a que llegara el técnico del cable. La verdad es que se tomo su tiempo...¡Pero que buena oportunidad de practicar algo de tipografía! Hice el bosquejo de las letras y cuando comienzo con el entintado, me viene esta imagen mental de un conejo fortachón, vestido en cuero y tatuado. Bueno, les cuento que me encantó esta idea. la voy a pulir en un futuro cercano, tal vez le dibuje una moto-bici o algo por el estilo.

And for last, a bit of my garden and a few of the last miniature roses of the season. Winter is going to be here soon.

Y por ultimo, un trocito de mi jardín y algunas de las ultimas rosas miniaturas de la temporada. Ya se esta acercando el invierno.
